Memorial Trees and Benches

Memorial Trees and Benches

People and events often deserve special recognition.  The City of Taneytown Department of Parks & Recreation invites you to memorialize a special person or life event with a tree or bench located in one of the City’s beautiful parks.

How It Works:

  1. Contact the Department of Parks and Recreation via telephone at 410-751-1100 or email Lvaccare@taneytownmd.gov.
  2. We will coordinate with you your tree/bench choice, your preferred placement location, and plaque customization.
  3. Once your payment is received, installation is scheduled.
  4. A letter of acknowledgement with a picture of the tree/bench and plaque is sent to the donor.

All purchases/donations are tax deductible.

Memorial Tree Donations

A tree planted in someone's memory or to commemorate a special occasion is a living tribute that benefits present and future generations and will be part of nature's beauty for decades to come.

  • We will provide a listing of tree choices and prices from our local nurseries – you select the tree species and size. Prices will vary but can range from $15 to over $200 depending on what type of tree and what size you choose.
  • You select the park and the location within the park.  We are happy to provide guidance for your selection.
  • You choose customization on the plaque. Plaque is 6” W x 4” H high-grade cast aluminum with laser engraved silver on a black background, 8 lines with up to 40 characters per line, and comes with a stake for placement.  You will receive a proof for approval prior to production. Cost of the plaque is $60.
  • Once payment is received, we will install the tree and the plaque.  Planting will be done in the Spring or Fall.
  • We will send a letter to the donor indicating the tree has been planted and the stake installed, including a picture.  If commemorating an event for living person(s) or otherwise honoring living person(s), we will also send a letter to the honoree(s).  We will list the honoree(s)/donor(s) with the picture on our Parks & Recreation Facebook page as well (unless otherwise requested).
  • A tree donation lasts the lifetime of the tree. If the tree dies within the first two years, it will be replaced by the City.

Memorial Bench Donations

Through the Memorial Bench Program, relatives and friends can provide a unique dedication to a loved one by placing a bench in one of the City’s parks.  This dedication provides a lasting remembrance in honor of a loved one or special event and enhances the meaning of the bench to observers.

With a donation of $1,500, the City will provide and install the bench with a customized plaque in the park and location of your choice.

  • You select the park and the location within the park.  We are happy to provide guidance for your selection.
  • A 6’ black onyx American-made steel bench with an arched back will be provided.  Installation includes a concrete pad for the bench.
  • You choose customization on the plaque. Plaque is 8” W x 2” H cast bronze with a dark bronze inset and light bronze engraving, 3 lines with up to 20 characters per line, and will be affixed to the front of the bench’s back.  You will receive a proof for approval prior to production.
  • Once payment is received, we will install the bench and the plaque.  Installation can be done any time of the year, weather permitting.
  • We will send a letter to the donor indicating the bench has been installed, including a picture.  If commemorating an event for living person(s) or otherwise honoring living person(s), we will also send a letter to the honoree(s).  We will list the honoree(s)/donor(s) with the picture on our Parks & Recreation Facebook page as well (unless otherwise requested).
  • If a memorial bench is vandalized or damaged, the City will repair or replace it.
